Summary:

The project aim is to explore and create novel ferromagnetic materials with enhanced functionalities that result from the interplay of electrical charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom in transition metal oxide heterostructures and superlattices.

Our approach is based on the concept of elastic strain engineering that is tailoring of magnetic exchange interaction by the control of strains arising at heterointerfaces.

In the proposal framework it will be realized:

  1. theoretical basis will be establish to identify the most promising materials and heterostructures with new functionalities relevant for applications;
  2. oxide heterostructures and superlattices will be design and grow on commercial substrates by means of metalorganic aerosol deposition technique with a quality comparable to the state-of-the-art semiconductor growth;
  3. characterize structural, electronic and magnetic properties as a prerequisite to delivering novel device concepts for oxide spintronics.
